The Cape Town Club
Phil Thurston, General Manager of The Cape Town Club
The Cape Town Club is a historic members' club at 18 Queen Victoria Street that was originally founded in 1858. While the club operates primarily for its members, the public can access its cafe and attend many of its cultural and arts events. The building was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and funded by Cecil Rhodes, it was once a meeting place for prominent figures. The Club found its permanent home in 1898. Once a hub for South Africa’s early powerbrokers, it was where Jan Smuts drafted the 1939 declaration of war. Women were admitted in 1979. After closing in 2017, the Club returned in 2024 to honour its past while embracing a more inclusive future.
