I'm Sarah Schilirò. I was born in Johannesburg and raised in Cape Town. I am a DJ and Music Producer by night and, by day, I spend most of my time outside, especially in the ocean, surfing. 

DJ’ing is mainly seasonal and because I prefer playing outdoors, my season runs from October through April. With my previous pregnancy I played until I was seven months pregnant and I'm doing the same for this pregnancy.

As for producing, I can squeeze in a session or two around nap time. I have taken a step back from producing as I’d like to be as present as possible for the early years of my children’s life. Music is forever. 

It’s difficult not to put pressure on yourself to put in the hours when it comes to making music, but I’ve come to the realization that nothing is more important to me than these first years. Life is long, and as someone who wants to do it all, choosing the right time is essential. I feel like I’m in a good space mentally when it comes to that balance. 

When asked what are some things I wish someone had told me as I began my mothering journey, I'd say that there aren’t many things that I wish people had told me, moreover there are so many things I wish people hadn’t told me, for example, the “wait for” and the “you’ll see” advice. Taking my experience day by day, being present and having no expectations is how I moved through being a first time mother.  

One of the things I learned about myself through motherhood is that I can do anything with little sleep. 

Being a mom gave an insight on the fact that I thought I knew how to live slowly. But motherhood taught me the real meaning of living slowly, which I am eternally grateful for. It exposed me for all my flaws and allowed me to grow faster than ever before. 

My motherhood journey has highlighted my ability to adapt to change and be present. Being less aware of outside opinions and listening to my baby is something I’ll take into my next experience.
